Course outline
Byzantine Archaeology and Art History (formerly a Magister course in Christian Archaeology) is a B.A. course devoted to the scholarly investigation of the material relics of the Byzantine millennium from late antiquity and the Early Byzantine civilisation up to the conquest of Constantinople in 1453 AD. It examines the diverse relations both with classical antiquity (Greek and Roman) and with cultures of the western and eastern Mediterranean. The course acquaints students with the fundamental features and methods of the subject and points up interdisciplinary points of contact both with other archaeological subjects and with European Art History, Church History and Medieval History.
The course focuses mainly on the following kinds of relic:
- architecture, urban construction and topography
- visual arts (mosaic, painting, sculpture)
- objets d’art, handicrafts, utensils
- inscriptions
- coins
Course structure
Byzantine Architecture and Art History at B.A. level can be selected as a first main subject (74 CP), a second main subject (74 CP) or as a subsidiary subject (35 CP) in conjunction with a different main subject (113 CP).
Main research interests
The main research interests of the Institute are determined by the scholars teaching there. With the staff situation as it is at the moment, research focuses mainly on architecture and settlement history in the Near East, Greece and Asia Minor.
