Hochschule für jüdische Studien (College of Jewish Studies)

Aims of the course

Like all humanities subjects, Jewish Studies is dedicated to reflection on the cultural foundations of society, both in the larger and the narrower context. The scholar’s primary task is to comprehend, explain and also to encourage understanding – between groups, at an individual level and in society as a whole. Processes of this kind require precise methodological underpinning and ongoing critical supervision based on competent appraisal of the fundamental issues involved, an eye for detail and a firm grasp of the picture as a whole, its particularity and its context.

Course outline

The study of Jewish life is not restricted to religion and ritual but encompasses all realms of human existence. Naturally, there are various points of contact with other subjects in the humanities and beyond. Accordingly, the College of Jewish Studies offers a broad array of sub-topics ranging from the history of the Jewish people, Jewish philosophy and the study of the Bible and the Talmud to literature, linguistics, Jewish art and Near East Studies. In this way the M.A. course at the College of Jewish Studies provides a comprehensive picture of the culture it is dedicated to and an opportunity to gain correspondingly comprehensive knowledge of Jewish life in Germany, Europe and the rest of the world, both now and in the past.

The M.A. degree obtained after successful completion of the course qualifies students to work towards a doctorate in the same subject. Alternatively, they can embark on a professional career at other academic institutions or with museums, commemoration centres and the media (print, online, broadcasting) or other institutions requiring the skills acquired in the course.

Formal requirements

Admission

To qualify for the M.A. course in Jewish Studies, applicants must first of all be in possession either of a German Zeugnis der Allgemeinen Hochschulreife/Fachhochschulreife or a university entrance qualification from another country or a document approved by legal provision or a state/government agency as being equivalent to such a qualification. Further they must have either completed a B.A. course in Jewish Studies in which at least 50% of the course was devoted to Jewish Studies or be in possession of a B.A. degree for a course with essentially the same content as a B.A. in Jewish Studies. Applications must be addressed directly to the College of Jewish Studies (Hochschule für Jüdische Studien) via its website: www.hfjs.eu/studium/studiengaenge/einschreibung.html.

Students can sign up for the M.A. course in Jewish Studies either as a main course with M.A. thesis and subsidiary subject or as a subsidiary course with a different main course. Eligible as subsidiary subjects are all courses at Heidelberg University that offer suitable curricula at M.A. level.
