Course outline
From a literature and culture studies perspective, this degree programme analyses phenomena arising from contact across territorial, ethnic, political and religious boundaries within the francophone linguistic and cultural area.
The focus is placed on the respective interdependencies of the francophone linguistic and cultural areas and their literary traditions. The degree programme takes an integral perspective on the entire francophone area of the world, from France via the francophone parts of Africa to Québec. During the course of study, an emphasis is placed on those aspects of francophone literature and culture Studies and linguistics as well as Transcultural Studies that show the interweavings of transcultural contact phenomena within the francophone area.
During the course students will obtain in-depth-knowledge and skills in literature and culture studies as well as linguistics. During the 3rd semester of the programme, they will have the opportunity to individually strengthen these skills during their academic semester at a partner university abroad. As an alternative, the third semester may be used for a work placement with a close correlation to the programme contents or an academic approach to some of the partial aspects in the programme.
The successful completion of a B.A. in a philological or cultural subject is a prerequisite for this degree programme. During the degree programme, students will strengthen their French language proficiency and will gain language skills in an additional Romance language.

Minor subject
The Master's degree programme Transcultural studies. Literature and language contact within the francophone area may be studied as a minor subject accounting for 20 credits.
Main research interests
The degree programme is research-oriented and centres on transcultural interdependencies as a starting point for an encompassing theory-based evaluation of these processes. Their understanding as dynamic and ever-changing phenomena forms the basis for their ongoing timeliness and relevance for a scholarly debate.
Students will be provided with well-founded knowledge of major theories on the modern-day era, which will serve them as a basis for further specific and in-depth research. The focus will mainly be placed on identity theories, the constitution of subject and alterity, on transculturality and nation building as well as basic concepts to adequately describe phenomena of complex language contact situations. The subsequent target is to discuss terminologies, typologies and concepts and to interlace perspectives from an aesthetics, linguistics, social and cultural studies point of view, in order to stimulate a dialogue across national, subject and paradigm borders.

Prospective students from Germany
Prospective students from Germany can enrol without prior application at the Central University Administration building by the beginning of the lecture period. To matriculate, they are required to show a written statement of admission issued by the representative of the Master’s programme they wish to attend, confirming that the requirements set out in the Admission Regulations have been met. Please apply to the Department of Romanic Languages and Literature for further information on how to proceed.
International prospective students
Prospective students from other countries must apply in writing, so that their previous academic record can be verified. The deadline for international applicants is 15 June. Applications must be addressed directly to the International Relations Office.
