Course outline

The course revolves around the study of two foreign languages (called B and C language) in relation to German as a native tongue. Other subjects are Linguistics and Translation Studies, Translation and Cultural Studies and the translation of technical/special-purpose texts. Students also have to take a compulsory-elective module (module 1) in a supplementary subject and a Cross-Disciplinary Skills module. The supplementary subjects available are Law, Economics and Medicine.

Foreign languages available for study are English, French, Spanish, Italian, Russian, Portuguese.

After successful completion of the course, graduates are awarded a Bachelor of Arts degree qualifying them to embark on a professional career.

The Bachelor of Arts examination is designed to establish whether students have grasped the principles of Translation Studies as an academic discipline, appreciate the connections between the individual disciplines they have studied and have acquired the foundational and subject-specific knowledge and the methodological and practical skills required to embark successfully on a professional career in the translation field.

Course structure

Standard course duration for the B.A. programme in Translation Studies is six semesters including examinations. Teaching extends over six semesters but in the final semester classes are restricted to a period of six weeks. To graduate, students are required to amass 180 ECTS credit points (CP) from the classes on offer (compulsory and elective-compulsory), which corresponds to 120 hours of classes.

The B.A. course divides into a foundational programme of four semesters, followed by an advanced programme lasting two semesters.

During the course students are required to enrol for an internship of at least 6 weeks in a country where their B language is the native tongue. On application, the Examinations Board may rule that periods previously spent abroad will qualify as being (partly) equivalent to an internship.
