Course Outline
Central to the M.A. course in Philosophy at Heidelberg University is the study of classical texts from the history of philosophy and the investigation of systematic issues in philosophy, such as metaphysics, the theory of science or language philosophy. The aim of the four-semester programme is to enable students to engage independently with philosophical argumentation and thus acquire the ability to grasp the concerns of ongoing philosophical research.
Course structure
The M.A. course in Philosophy normally follows on from a prior B.A. programme in the same subject, although in exceptional cases it is also open to students with a B.A. degree in a related subject. The standard duration of the course is four semesters. The degree awarded at the end of the course is Master of Arts (M.A.).
The M.A. course in Philosophy at Heidelberg University does not admit of a subsidiary or minor subject. However achievements in classes with demonstrable relevance to Philosophy attended at other institutes may be recognised and awarded credit points not exceeding the number normally acquired in subsidiary (minor) subjects (20 CP).
There are M.A. degree courses at Heidelberg University that do require a subsidiary subject. In conjunction with these programmes you can also study Philosophy as a subsidiary (minor) subject.
The course divides into
- compulsory modules on systematic philosophy
- compulsory modules on the history of philosophy
- modules enabling you to specialise in accordance with your own interests and with a view to defining a topic for your later M.A. thesis and (if so desired) a doctorate
- the conduct of independent projects and/or selection of a further elective topic.
Subsidiary (minor) subject
The M.A. course in Philosophy can be taken as a subsidiary (minor) subject accounting for 20 CP.
