Course outline
The M.Sc. course in Psychology builds on a previous B.Sc. degree course in the same subject. It provides its students with deeper insights into the relevant subject matter, skills and methods with a view to qualifying them for a professional career either as practitioners or in academic research on psychological issues related to one of the two focal areas they can choose between.
Focal areas
1. Developmental and Clinical Psychology
Students who select this focus are committing themselves to in-depth engagement with basic research in General, Differential, and Developmental Psychology plus application-related research in Clinical Psychology and Educational Psychology. They will acquire sound knowledge on emotion and cognition and their neuronal foundations, their development, the differences between individuals, and abnormal psychological development. Major topics are interaction and self-regulation of emotion and cognition, personality development, causes of psychic disorders at different ages, psychological intervention methods, and the psychology of health. Focus 1. is dedicated equally to research and application and bridges the gap between science and practice.
2. Organisational Behaviour and Adaptive Cognition
Students who select this focus are committing themselves to in-depth engagement with basic research in General and Social Psychology plus application-related research in Occupational Psychology and Organisational Psychology. Teaching centres on the way in which people in organisations use information and make decisions, how they interact in dyads, groups and at the organisational level, and how they influence one another or are themselves influenced. Major topics are psychological diagnostics in organisations, human resource management, process and change management, leadership, and health management. Focus 2. is dedicated equally to research and application and bridges the gap between science and practice.

Career prospects for graduates
Course structure
The M.Sc. course is modular in structure and invites students to opt for a focal area of their choice. In 10 of the total of 13 modules there are (usually) various teaching offerings to choose from. In the first two semesters, students attend classes both in their own and in the other focal area, in the third and fourth semester they concentrate fully on their focal area. Work on the M.Sc. thesis also begins in the third/fourth semesters.
The study guide is available here as a PDF file.
Completion of the course
The M.Sc. course concludes with the completion of the M.Sc. thesis, the topic of which will be related to the focal area the student has opted for.
